Well chaps and chapets, its been another 1st for me with this dish. Yes, can you believe I have never had Ramen before? Seriously, if you read my blog you will know I love noodles and so to have never had Ramen seemed an insult to the noodle lords!
So I recently pulled out Mr Olivers comfort food cook book and I made my way through this little beauty of a recipe. Its a somewhat complex recipe, it takes time so be prepared to enjoy your kitchen for a while but its defiantly worth it!
I really enjoyed the whole mix. The soft noodle soaked up all of the delicious salty broth and the runny soft boiled egg was beautiful against the tender flavorful meat. I even enjoyed the crackling (which I don’t normally), although it was a little awkward to eat and I resulted in diving in with the fingers!
I love weekends which give you the time to experiment in the kitchen and that’s exactly how I used my time this weekend.
Yesterday I decided to try making Gyoza for the first time. I wasn’t alone, alas Mr Oliver helped me through the media of his comfort foods book.
I found it a really straight forward recipe to follow but you defiantly need a good hour or two for the prep.
I enjoyed making the Gyoza dough but found it a real workout session trying to get it nice and thin.
But it was all totally worth it!
The Gyoza were perfectly formed and perfect in taste. They were nice and light (which meant I ate about 15!) and they were fantastic in the dipping sauces (although they were equally tasty without!). The ginger and spice really fired through, a taste sensation!
Chicken Kiev conjures up memories of frozen hunks of processed meat with a watery garlic mixture oozing out. I don’t know about you, by history with chicken kiev’s isn’t good.
But I don’t live in the past and when I came across this recipe in Jamie’s comfort food back I though “Yes, let’s make some good Kiev memories!”
This is one of the less complex recipes in this book, it was pretty straight forward to undertake and it did not require much prep work.
The result was marvellous! Soft tender chicken, oozing with a thick creamy butter and coated in a light crisp shell. Matched with a broccoli laden mash potatoe and sprinkled with fresh spinach, I found the whole thigh a hearty and comforting plate. A good Sunday dish id say.
Jamie Oliver’s Comfort food cookbook is one that I particularly enjoy but for quite some time I’ve flicked past the quesadilla recipe which features sprouts as the main ingredient. Sprouts. It’s really never appealed to me on any level.
Alas, Christmas came and went and I found I had a small stockpile of raw sprouts left and so it seemed fate was telling me that this recipe needed to be tried.
As I was cooking I genuinely wished we were having a different dish, I quite honestly couldn’t imagine an enjoyable taste and my stomach yearned for something higher scoring on the naughty scale. But something wonderful happened, as I started to cook the sprout mixture in the butter the most amazing smell took over the kitchen and I knew I had been wrong!
Wow. Seriously, wow. This quesadilla was the tastiest I had ever eaten. The mixture retained the strong savory, earthy sprout taste but engaged with a buttery creamy flavor which was out of this world. Mixed in with some fresh spicy sauce we really did have a winning dish and I will be making this for any lucky guests.
It just shows…don’t judge the sprout.

I cooked this on a Friday night knowing that I wanted a treat, something tasty but something that wouldnt require huge amount of prep work. This recipe was perfect for that, you could smoke the salmon your self but on this occasion I opted not to. I did however make the basil mayonnaise which is really delicious.
When you bite into this mammoth sandwich you instantly get the feeling of indulgence, soft smoked salmon, sticky sweet bacon, oozing creamy mayo….a total delight.
Make it, eat it, enjoy!
Gavin requested I make a Risotto as he has become quite taken with them as of late.
So I “eeny meeny miny moed” my way through my recipe book collection and landed on one of my most recent additions – Jamie’s comfort foods.
He didn’t fail me and I found this recipe for a risotto, all be it a rather simplistic one.
Now I wasn’t sure if this would hit Gav’s culinary craving as it lacked his most desired ingredient….meat!!
However, he blooming loved it!
I enjoyed it but not quite as much as Gavin, I found it too have an almost synthetic taste, not sure why but it didn’t take me enough to put this on my “to do again” list.
