The Merlin

Desert, Pork, Restaurant

This Wednesday I met my beautiful (and newly pregnant friend) Loveday for dinner at the Merlin, Alderly Edge.

The venue itself is quirky manner style and I have to say I felt throughly comfortable and rather cool in the atmosphere created.

The menu, although small, beheld a variety of gorgeous dishes and I could of happily been given any. I had to choose however and so I opted for pigs cheeks with black pudding, a red wine jus and mashed potatoes. I chose this as I’ve never eaten pig cheeks before and I love black pudding at the moment.

It was great! The sauce was rich and sweet, beautifully complimenting the slightly salty cheeks and adding further depth to the black pudding.

We then had a naughty little desert, I opted for a traditional treacle sponge but they were all out 😧 and so I compensated with a treacle tart (the next best thing). I had asked for this hot but it disappointingly came cold, non the less it was sweet, the pastry was soft and melt in the mouth and the vanilla ice cream was clearly top notch quality. A lovely end to the meal although very indulgent.

We had a £10 voucher and so the meal resulted in being £15 each, an unbelievably cheap night considering the venue and food quality.

I would recommend the Merlin and will be going back.

Food: 9/10 (points lost on the cold desert)
Service: 10/10 (can’t fault)
Venue: 10/10 (quirky, cool, sophisticated)
